OVERVIEW OF
THE TEFL JOB MARKET

"Anyone with the RSA/Cambridge Certificate is in a very strong position to get a job in any country where English is widely taught."
Susan Griffith, Teaching English Abroad

WHERE DO PEOPLE TEACH EFL?
There are EFL schools/programs everywhere, but most are in non-English speaking countries. Teaching takes place in public schools, language schools, universities, companies, etc. Public school classes are often very large: 30+ students. Classes in language schools and in companies usually have 6-14 students, and some are 1-on-1.

WHERE ARE THE BEST TEFL JOB MARKETS?
WHERE IS IT HARD TO FIND EFL JOBS?
For answers, see the TEFL World Map later on this page.

HOW LONG ARE THE CONTRACTS? WHEN DO THEY START?
Most legal jobs are for a year, particularly if they are arranged in advance, with the employer providing airfare and/or housing. Some 3-6 month contract jobs exist, but most short term jobs are hourly paid and can only be arranged in the overseas country.

Jobs are usually available at any time of the year. The exception is Europe, where 90% of jobs start in October or January.
